Centre for Social Work Practice Legacy Fund

About the fund

The Centre for Social Work Practice was launched in 2006 at The Tavistock Clinic London and became a charity in 2013 with the primary aim of promoting Relationship Based Practice in Social Work, with its emphasis on the helping relationship and its links to the psycho-social and psycho-dynamically informed casework tradition. Until closure as a charity in 2020 the Centre supported initiatives and projects which furthered Relationship Based and Reflective Practice. The Centre transferred its funds to GAPS, with whom the Centre had a close relationship and similar aims, to form the Centre for Social Work Legacy Fund (which is a restricted fund).
The purpose of the Fund is to continue to support innovative work in the area of Relationship Based Practice, including direct therapeutic provision, education, practice development and research.

The fund is overseen an advisory panel which includes a number of former CfSWP trustees and members and meets three times per year.

The Legacy Fund was formally launched on 9th November 2021. The Legacy Fund invites applications from individuals, user groups, registered charities, CICs, CIOs, health and local authority services for funding for projects which align with the following priorities:

The fund’s priorities

  • Supporting innovative work in the area of relationship–based practice, including direct therapeutic provision, education, practice development and research.
  • Support for individuals and groups who for a variety of reasons lack the necessary resources to develop learning and practice in relationship-based social work, with a particular focus on applications from those who for reasons of systemic disadvantage, disability or poverty may find themselves excluded from accessing opportunities to develop or fund their work.

What is ‘Relationship Based Practice’?

Relationship-based practice puts the provision of a relationship at the heart of social work.   It  helps people (children, young people and adults) negotiate complex and painful experiences, transitions and decisions in their lives.    It emphasises the helping relationship as the medium through which the internal and external worlds of the participants can be engaged with to the benefit of both.

How much can I apply for?

If you are applying as an individual or on behalf of a user group, you can apply for up to £2000. Registered charities and other non-profit making organisations can apply for up to £5000
