This statement is a reflection of an ongoing journey. We recognise that we are not perfect and that we have made and will make mistakes. This is a working document.
As an organisation, we value diversity of thought, experience, background and identity, and want to be part of an evolving social journey towards understanding, inclusion and equality. Our intention is to foster learning, development and an atmosphere of belonging. We will nonetheless challenge behaviours and perspectives that are discriminatory or oppressive.
We acknowledge that racism, other forms of discrimination, and exclusion harm relationships, communities and society as a whole. GAPS stands solidly against structures of power that support and drive divisive narratives. As an organisation, we believe that it is our responsibility to challenge othering and to create spaces for connection and humanness as an antidote. Furthermore we recognise the power dynamics at play between organisers of events and attendees, and actively seek communication with members and participants in GAPS activities.
We aim to create a dynamic process where everyone is supported and encouraged to challenge and question, to hear differences, and to develop a shared narrative that can itself be challenged. GAPS recognises that this shared narrative will evolve over time as our awareness develops. It may not be possible to integrate all narratives and, in those times, our commitment is to walk alongside, and amplify the voices of those who are marginalised and discriminated against.
