Misconceptions relating to an individual’s culture, religious beliefs and spirituality can create barriers to access and provision of culturally appropriate interventions for this client group.   As professionals and as individuals we need to be aware of the differentiating views of mental health within different cultures and countries. 

Understanding how others may perceive aspects of Social Work is a vital skill in today’s diverse landscape, and is really important to ensure interventions are strength based and have positive outcomes.

This session offers a supportive space to reflect, learn, and understand concepts that may sit outside traditional interventions and may not fit into the frameworks that we work within. The session will consider differing aspects of mental health and how individuals may perceive mental health which may not fully align to traditional medical model perspectives.

What we will do together and what you will come away with:

• Increased Awareness: Understand the differing views of mental health and differing views of treatment options specifically focusing of working with aspects of Jinn Possession and Black Magic.

• Reflective Practice: Engage in meaningful discussions through break out rooms to explore, reflect on current practices, and identify areas for growth.

• Case Studies: Look at actual case examples where some of these themes have been present and how professionals have navigates concepts of jinn possession and black magic.

• Practical Tools for Action: Consider how concepts which may not align to the traditional frameworks can be navigated and use of research and evidence based practice.

The workshop will be highly engaging and interactive There will be time for group work and individual personal reflection.  The session will be delivered via Zoom. You will need access to your camera and microphone.

About Soyeb Aswat

Soyeb  is a registered Independent Social Worker and works as a Professional Social Work Lead within Mental Health. He is also a AMHP and BIA and has worked predominantly with South Asian Muslim communities. He has supported communities, individuals and organisations in considering culture, religion and spirituality within their day to day interventions, care planning and risk assessments.
